Once you’ve ensured your home is as well insulated and energy efficient as possible, you may want to consider generating your own energy using ‘green’ renewable technologies such as wind and solar power. This is known as microgeneration.
Microgeneration technologies can be expensive, but renewable energy grants are available from the government’s Low Carbon Buildings Programme to help with the cost.
Microgeneration or renewable energy grants are currently available for solar photovoltaic panels, which generate electricity, solar thermal panels, which are used for heating water, freestanding or roof-mounted wind turbines, small hydroelectric plants, ground source heat pumps and wood-fuelled stoves and boilers (also known as biomass).
Depending on the type of technology you wish to install, you can claim up to £2,500 per property or 50% of the total cost, whichever is lower. The grant scheme operates on a first-come-first-served basis, so early application is advisable.
Anyone can apply for a renewable energy grant, but in order to qualify you need to have installed loft insulation and wall insulation (if applicable) that meets current building regulation standards, installed heating controls, including a room thermostat and programmer or timer, and fitted low energy light bulbs in all appropriate light fittings. You will also need to have any installation completed by an accredited installer using accredited products.
If you are considering microgeneration technologies for your home, contact the Energy Saving Trust (EST) for more information on which type of renewable energy technology is the best option for you. The EST's home energy generation selector tool will be able to help you decide which, if any, renewable energy technology is suitable for your home.
You can apply for a renewable energy grant online directly through the Low Carbon Buildings Programme website.
